Hypnosis Techniques

Evolution is about adaptation and natural selection. Hypnosis techniques have evolved in adapting to the different personality, character traits , and learning style of individuals.

There was a time that hypnotists believed one modality was suitable for all, just as pedagogues perceived that one learning style was sufficient for the masses. If a student had a problem with the learning process then it was their deficiency, not the educational system.

It used to be accepted theory that some were susceptible to trance like states while others were not. Today this belief is a proven myth.

Around the mid 1900’s the field of hypnotism developed the understanding that different belief systems and perceptions called for alternate approaches.

Many different models are used to reach the subconscious mind to evoke change. It is up to the hypnotist to discover the mental template of their clients.

Respecting the differences of each person and determining which modality the patient will respond to delivers the greatest success.

The current generation fits best with the Ericksonian and NLP methods because their training is inquiry based learning. They are less likely to accept not having control over the hypnosis process and will usually come with an arsenal of questions.

The four different modalities are: Traditional, Eriksonian, Neuro-Lingusitic Programming whose acronym is NLP, Self Hypnosis. Each of these techniques are tailored to assist each individual to a favorable outcome.

The different form and type of techniques utilized may be combined for the ultimate experience when influencing the subconscious mind.

Traditional Hypnosis is model that most people are familiar with. This type of hypnosis usually has three different levels. The first is the pre hypnosis phase, followed by visualization, suggestion and finally the awakening stage.

The first phase introduces deep relaxation mechanisms to slowly bring the client from beta to alpha brain waves. The relaxation phase continues until a trance state is established.

The hypnotist then instructs the client to follow specific commands.

The practitioner tells the subject what to do, taking over the responsibility to relax the client, introduces beneficial suggestions to the unconscious and terminates the session. This method is for people who do not challenge authority and feel more comfortable taking and following commands.

At this point in the process there is no resistance because the conscious mind has been circumvented, allowing the unconscious to accept messages or statements suggested by the hypnotist.

The practitioner may guide the subconscious mind to register alternative ideas other than the incessant chatter of the conscious mind. Comments that aid in producing the desired intent are key to changing the old negative patterns.

The practitioner trains the unconscious mind by using positive messages that produce desired results for a particular problem. This process alters attitudes and belief systems by programming the subconscious with positive concepts of a wanted or longed for goal.

For example, if the subject gets car sick , the practitioner uses positive messages about driving in a car with images that the subject enjoys and appreciates. The subconscious provides these images at the appropriate time altering the automatic response when on an excurson in the car.

Ericksonian hypnosis is best for people that appreciate subliminal suggestions rather than direct authoritative approach. These indirect messages are more easily digested by the conscious mind because they come in stories and metaphors.

Instead of the statement, ‘your eyelids are growing heavier and heavier and you are getting sleepy, the Ericksonian method might say,’ perhaps your eyes may close as you listen to this story…’

NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming employs the same thought patterns that are inducing the problem. NLP flash allows the smoker who has a cigarette with coffee to dissociate the two items the unconscious previously associated.

NLP reframing negotiates with the unconscious to take charge of changing a behavior by creating another that is acceptable in it’s place.

The OCD that is causing the unwanted behavior is replaced with an appropriate behavior that will bring about the same consequence.

The success of this process stems from the understanding that there is a positive intention behind all behaviors. For example, if one overeats because their father only showed approval when they cleaned their plate even if they were not hungry, here the positive intention is approval.

If a woman finds herself in an unwanted break up with her beloved and is deeply hurt, she may unconsciously become overweight to keep herself out of relationships and the possibility of getting hurt again. This is a positive intention for overeating.

More than 70% of learners take in information visually versus auditory. NLP uses Video Hypnosis based on this fact.

The mind captures images, stores them in the subconscious and sets the program.

For example, if you have cried when watching a sunset, movie, or reading a book, you know how powerful video may influence the unconscious.

Self hypnosis actually contains all modalities since the individual consents to hypnotism. Self hypnosis is done by listening to a tape or looking at a visual to move from beta to alpha consciousness.

Once the subject is in a self induced relaxed state, they may begin to listen to auto suggestions that create the desired change of behavior and beneficial thought patterns.

Today there is a hypnosis modality for every type and kind of person. The science of hypnotism has evolved and adapted to the needs of all learning and personality archetypes. The practice of hypnotism evolves daily and aids millions by programming the subconscious to mirror the desired life.
